A 1906 note records Depot Agent Cox selling 22 excursion tickets to Sherman County Texas near Stratford amid a snowbound outlook. The 1926 item notes the Newton Daily News issue marking Hotel Maytag opening and washing machine manufacturing. The 1951 highlight praises parking meters as merchants cars are removed from streets. The 1966 item reports voters rejecting 682 to 574 a $140,000 bond for a municipal airport runway.
J G Boat of Pella and James Bellamy of Knoxville reported October sales of 76 206 in series E and H bonds in Marion county, bringing 1976 total to 1 100 398. Statewide October sales reached 7 930 404 and Iowa’s ten month total 89 872 995. Allamakee leads at 116 percent, with Marshall 108 percent Monroe 106 percent Dickinson 101 percent Greene 99 9 percent.
Chuck De Wild a Pella native and Central College graduate trained as a navigator in the Air Force after enlisting in February 1943. He flew missions over France and Germany, survived a 1944 crash in Holland, spent days in an underground hospital at The Hague, and later arrived at Stalag Luft III where he reconnectd with fellow POW Bob Menning.
The escapees began a grueling march through snow and freezing temperatures toward Stalag VII A, about 30 kilometers from Munich, as Patton’s approaching tanks forced a sudden break in the barracks siege. A fuller report will follow in a later story.
