Hog raisers urged to curb rats and mice on farms
Mahaska County Extension Director Gene Reits Setter says rodents must be controlled on farms with controlled environment hog projects. Insulation materials in hoghouses such as polystyrene, fibreglass, and corn stalk boards are vulnerable as rats burrow nests, impairing insulation and stressing temperature control. Researchers seek effective repellents, with some chemicals working under certain conditions.
