Artificial Lights Mean More Eggs
Iowa State College extension specialist W R Whitfield explains that using electric lights in poultry houses can extend daylight, boosting winter egg production. Four methods exist including all night, morning only, evening only, or combo lighting to provide 12 to 14 hours daily with proper water and feed, and dimmers or multiple switches as needed.

Storage problem looms for 1952 insecticides
Storage facilities cannot hold the quantities of DDT toxaphene chlor dane benzene hexachloride and other pesticides for Iowa crops. Production capacity remains adequate but bottlenecks in storage threaten ongoing manufacture. Farmers should buy a portion of their estimated needs now and keep buying in advance to ease storage pressure and help gauge overall 1952 demand.

Electricity Elevates Corn and Grain on Iowa Farm
George Horn of Washington County participates in a statewide electrification program with Iowa State College and the Iowa Utilities Association. Electric power now elevates 4600 bushels of corn in October 1950 at 1.7 cents per 100 bushels, and grain lifting occurs monthly at about 1.33 cents per 100. The system saves labor by eliminating tractor belt changes and extra tractors for harvest, simplifying unloading and storage.

Cod Liver Oil Makes Rat Bait More Tasty
Harold Gunderson, an extension entomologist at Iowa State College, suggests farmers mix 1 quart of crude cod liver oil with poison bait to entice rats in barns and feed stores. The tip targets rats avoiding half and half oats and corn meal bait when other feeds are accessible.
