Iowa villages not dying out yet in 1960s study
Iowa geographers Neil Salisbury and Gerard Rushton report half of Iowa villages grow as urban industrial belt edges reach rural towns. Some towns prosper as dormitories for workers near northeast industry, while others decline due to poor location or shifting economies. The study covers eastern and southwestern counties with door to door interviews and notes limited internal village differences between growing and declining towns.
