Marion County extension director Forrest J Kohrt urges farmers to send seed samples to Iowa State College Seed Testing Laboratory before January 1 1953 to receive germination and labeling data for marketing. Seed laws restrict sale of untested or poorly labeled seed with weed content and require proper labeling for off farm sales. The lab tests germination pure seed other crop seed inert matter and weed seeds and provides a quality grade for each sample.
Weather shaped a variable season as dry warm days kept large duck flights from Canada scarce. Opening day was decent in Iowa but bags dwindled thereafter and blues failed to appear while geese largely bypassed the state. Louisiana refuges saw most expected birds arrive early, prompting a pessimistic 1952 season wrap but optimism for next year.
Kohrt offers seed testing service for Marion County growers. He explains how much seed is needed for testing and how to take a representative sample. Samples can be mailed in special containers or sent to Iowa State College Testing Laboratory in Ames. A nominal charge applies, and results go to the grower and extension director. Kohrt can help interpret results and address questions about compliance with the state seed law.
Wayne Vander Werff, a sophomore at Pella Public High School, promotes a future in dairy farming. He is pictured with his Holstein heifer, his project in vocational agriculture, with hopes to expand it into a herd. The Vander Werff family lives in Warren east of Pella with parents Bert and Anna.
Gerrit Sneller of Otley Iowa won top honors in the 1952 National Selected Five Acre Corn Growing Contest by the DeKalb Agricultural Assn. He posted an outstanding yield of 155.47 bushels per acre to top county entries and earned a County Championship Plaque as the largest event of its kind drew more than 5,000 farm visitors.

In Manning area hunters pursuing a fox found a tom cat in their bag along with pheasants and a fox. The tomcat bolted from the cover revealing the mix up just after the fox had already lost a life, prompting the hunters to realize the misidentification.
