Pella Drives County Population Growth With 174 Percent Rise
The final census totals show Pella posting a 174 percent population increase from 1950 to 1960, the county’s largest gain. Indianola rose from 5,145 to 7,062 residents, up 37.2 percent, while Knoxville added 192 people. Kne official total is now 7,87. Pleasantville grew by 132 residents to 1,025. All other towns declined. Marion county urbanites total 16,604 or 64 percent of the county population.

Local officials received ACT results showing Pella Community High School seniors again scoring highly. Thirty two juniors took the test, about 38.7 percent of the senior class of 87. Thirteen of the 32 scored at or above the 90th percentile, and four attained the 99th percentile.

In Mahaska County Pleasant Grove rural school near Olivet was sold Monday afternoon. Bid by Jella De Vries reached 286 dollars on the site previously bought by Elmer Klein. Auctioneer Van den Berg and clerk Marion De Geus oversaw the sale with about 60 to 79 attendees. Two more Mahaska County sales are planned: December 19 Wheatgrow School and December 22 Pleasant View near Pella.
