The Little Dutch snapped a losing streak with a 59 49 home win over Grinnell after a 57 55 defeat to Albia. Sophomore Jay Bender led with 20 points, Lart Olsthoorn added 16, and Brummel 10 as the team improved offense and defense, despite foul shooting woes.
Pella High J V boys evened their record at 2-2 by beating Albia 66-44 on Friday and losing to Grinnell 66-64 in overtime on Saturday. Thornburg led with 17 points and nine rebounds. Van Vark had 21 points by halftime and Vander Streek scored 16. Free throw struggles and late mistakes cost the team a chance to win Saturday. The J V team travels to Centerville Friday night.
Pella High seniors Bruce Van Hal and Bob Bosch, football teammates turned basketball hopefuls, aim for a stronger season. Bosch, 63 inches and 170 pounds, and Van Hal, 5 10 inches and 170 pounds, emphasize teamwork and readiness to support teammates as they prepare for the season opener after early losses.
The Little Dutch varsity team fell 36 15 with the J V reserves losing 34 19. Craig Vander Wert earned the only Pella pin as Dan Murtha Francis Bricker Les Nieuwsma Craig Vander Wert Dave Ryan Les Bettis Mike De Jong posted wins or decisions in the listed weight classes at Albia Thursday.
In a junior varsity meet Mark Vander Meiden and Keith Terlouw impressed with pins. Senior results include Corso, Hamilton, Montgomery, Coon, Scott and others with multiple pins and decisions. The Little Dutch host Centerville at home Thursday.
Centerville leads standings with 68 56 win over Fairfield. Davis County 60 52 loss to Cardinal. Winterset 65 over Mount Ayr 45. Oskaloosa 67 over Albia 62. Chariton at Winterset and Fort Madison at Centerville not reported. Upcoming games include Davis County at Fairfield and Pella at Centerville among others. Conference games in caps.
New Monroe, Lynnville Sully, and Pella Christian Pella High basketball teams won’t participate in holiday events this year as South Central Conference schools endorsed the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls Athletic Union ban on Dec 23 to 30. No practices will occur in that period, though the Pella Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Dec 15 remains on.
