Thirteen Years on The Rural Mail Delivery

Thirteen years after rural free delivery began in the United States the system expanded from five routes in West Virginia to over 40,804 rural carriers serving more than 20 million residents on routes totaling over a million miles. Congress encouraged routes, sometimes duplicating ones, but over time dupes were dropped and the service stands strong.
