POW CAMP TALES OF WWII PRISONER EFFORTS AND ESCAPES
Lt Bob Menning, the 142nd American officer captured in World War II, details life at a Polish POW camp near Laugan south of Berlin. He describes tunnels Tom Dick and Harry, crude digging methods, and daily life guarded by guards under barracks. He recalls reuniting with Charley De Wild after escape attempts and the shared ingenuity of prisoners.

J G Boat of Pella and James Bellamy of Knoxville led Marion county savings bonds chairmen in reporting September sales of Series E and H totaling 94 838. First nine months sales reached 1 024 1 percent of the state goal with November sales at 7 562 180. In 1976 nine month sales were 81 942 591 or 73 percent of the goal, Allamakee leading at 108 percent, followed by Monroe 99 percent Marshall 95 percent Dickinson 94 Humboldt 92 Marion 90 percent. Mahaska 432 395 for 72 percent and Jasper 1 465 689 for 80 percent are also listed.

Escape Tragedy in Forest Compound January 1945
Fragmentary account recalls a failed Nazi encampment breakout near Sagan Germany in January 1945. Of about 300 prisoners only 53 reached the woods, while the rest were hunted, killed or cremated. A memorial later honors the deceased.
