Chimney Rock National Monument Visit Captures Oregon Trail Wonder
On a Northwest bus trip July 13 1977 travelers explored Chimney Rock 22 miles east of Scottsbluff Nebraska a famed landmark rising 525 feet above the plain. Historians note its spire may have shrunk from weather and possible lightning, while emigrants carved names on the cone and recalled it as a milepost signaling the next leg toward Oregon California and Utah.
