Planning and plowing windbreak sites should start in fall to aid spring planting. Gardiner, Town State College extension forester, notes fall-plowed ground warms earlier and makes a better bed. Windbreaks should be north or west of the farmstead and about 56 feet wide for evergreen rows, with 18 feet between trees and a 1-foot gap from the outer row to the fence.
