Irrigating Plant in Ohio Farm Aids Crops in Drought

Eben Fish of Jennings avenue extension near Cleveland operates one of the era’s practical irrigation systems. A half acre pond powers a pump to lift water to a high standpipe that supplies seven pounds pressure to sprinklers. The setup uses 15 inch sewer pipe for the standpipe, 3 inch iron mains, and 4 inch lines buried two and a half feet. The system sprinkles about 2,000 barrels daily, with cement joints, a built helper, and a self-contained, largely unattended engine arrangement. The device was designed after drought losses and demonstrates a wide tub storage tank beneath a gravel subsoil bed.

Farmer Lea Tale Of A Stingy Man And Feuding Kin

A poem narrates Farmer Lea as avaricious and frugal, who saves all wealth but earns family strife after his death. The tale ends with lawyers feasting on fees as relatives quarrel over the estate amid a grim obituary setting. The excerpt mentions Mary C. Philips in Advance and a dated August 9 note from Passmore and Anetter Lon.
