Silage Feeding and Preservation Practices for Mixed Forage Crops

Farmers use sudan grass oats red clover tilthy bluegrass and mixed pastures plus sorghums for silage. Analysis shows grass silages supply similar nutrients to corn silage and no feeding difference between the two types. Cutting slightly ahead of hay time and using preservatives aid nutrient retention depending on moisture. Ground corn or cane molasses preserves green crops as effectively as corn sugar, with some use of round corn. Higher moisture in grasses may require reinforced silos and careful handling during ensiling.
