Prairie City area farms draw attention from visitors
Reporter circles Prairie City to visit two notable farms, the Hiemstras and Verwers. Henry Verwers, a Kellogg transplant, acquires a 240 acre tract and repurposes it with mechanized farming, corralling a new spreader and barrier to mitigate drought damage. Hiemstra family, renting from Des Moines owner, fences new grounds and showcases a well kept home with circle rock garden.

Farmer Hiemstra reports efficient ensilage and strong oats
Hiemstra describes using a pit silo for ensilage since no silo was on site. He stored five acres of sorgo and three acres of corn, covered with bean hay, with minimal spoilage. Oat yields were excellent at seventy bushels per acre for common oats, while Canadian oats yielded thirty due to bugs. He holds three thousand bushels of oats and features a large, well kept corn crib and barn.

Land Boom Voices and Farm Conditions Near Prairie City
Mr Hiemstra comments that land above one hundred dollars an acre is scarce given current productivity and grain prices. He recalls his father’s warning about three to four hundred dollar land during the boom and forecasts farmers selling high priced land yet again. Corn and beans show health though some seedings must be plowed under. Pictures on page capture the Hiemtras and local Dutch families near Prairie City and northwest toward Pella.
