Oats suffer little disease damage in 1985 Iowa crop
Iowa State College plant pathologist J Artie Browning notes oats in 1985 faced the least disease damage since 1952 due to an advanced maturity and weather. Crown rust mainly from buckthorn and cool June delayed spread, while stem rust appeared but caused little harm. Brownings emphasizes rust infection occurred yet maturity limited impact.

Increased Oat Yield Attributed To Use of Nitrogen
Nitrogen application over three years raised average oat yield by 3.3 bushels per acre at Ames. Researchers note the practice improves production and may influence regional barley and corn margins. Local agricultural teams plan further trials to assess long term effects and optimum application rates.

Nitrogen rate and drill spacing affect Iowa oat yields
Agricultural Experiment Station of Iowa State College reports that nitrogen increases were similar across 20 40 or 60 pounds per acre. Drilled oats in western Iowa yielded 10.5 bushels more per acre with higher nitrogen, while oat yields rose about 5 bushels per acre when drilled in 7 inch versus 14 inch rows. Spacing differences were partly offset by thinner plant populations. Legume stands and hay yields varied with row spacing and site Castana western Iowa.
