Social Security Rules For Farmers Quoted By Waterloo Official

Farm Rental Rules Under Social Security Rules
A farm owner who rents land either for cash or on a crop share is not earning self employment income from that farm activity for social security purposes. Rentals from real estate are treated as real estate income unless the owner is a real estate dealer. If the owner also operates part of the farm, income from that operated part counts as self employment earnings. When combining farm activity with a non farm enterprise, up to 4200 dollars in a year can be credited to the social security account from both activities.
Social Security credit rules for farm wages
Wages earned for farm work can generate social security credits. In such cases the wages count first toward earnings, and you report and pay social security self employment tax only on enough farm earnings to bring the yearly combined total to the required level.
