Iowa officials warn that nearly 20,000 residents awaiting old age pensions may lose help if federal aid under the Social Security Act stalls. With current funds and potential state taxes, only about 6,000 of 20,000 will receive aid, while 4,000 grants remain for 25,000 applicants. Grants will favor those most in need and no back payments will be made. The commission expects future awards depend on 1935 tax collections and possible federal aid. In a separate note, Hungarians in the unsettled region turn to paganism for spiritual guidance.
A fragmentary local page lists visitors from Santa Monica Des Moines and Eddyville plus Cedar Rapids New Sharon and Oskaloosa. Newton edged Shell 1 to 0, the only run coming in the fourth inning as Lemly and Davis sparred with Wisse and Ver Meer.
Cattle prices show a renewed upturn with fat steers likely to hold gains around 11.50 to 14.00 as cheaper grades rise. Cheaper cattle, cutters, bulls, and marketed heifers lead demand with sausage and cheaper cuts rising, while feeders stay scarce and stockers hold for 30 to 60 days. Hogs hover near 10 to 12 dollars with warehouse shortages easing and lambs hold steady to slightly firm.
The State Fair sets events across Aug 25 to Aug 26 with Children’s Day free for under sixteen, auto races, judging, and rodeo activities. World War Veterans and FHA model home exhibitions anchor weekend events, plus concerts and a matinee horse show. Clem Sohn the Batman appears Aug 26.
The report cites preparations for a major state fair with remarks from officials including President Ed O'Neil of the Armenie and Farm Bureau, plus commemorations of the Spanish War veterans. It mentions anticipated events, speeches, parade features, and a pledge of a large crowd, with Corey praising institutions and programs amid political shifts and a past election defeat of Kent by Judge Utterback.
Cassius C. Dowell of Des Moines, ex congressman from the sixth district, toured Indianola after a European voyage that refreshed him. He plans to seek the Republican nomination in the next spring primary.
A fragmented text notes about foreseen trillions of dollars in foreign obligations, vast cotton production figures, Reno divorces totaling millions, a twin population estimate, dozens of venomous plants, and a New York life insurer profiting from farm foreclosures with AAA relief money.
