Antonia Grandin, age 66 years, prompted by mental decline, ended his life by hanging in the hayloft of his barn at 610 W First Street, while his wife was away. His death occurred about eight this morning after family search. funeral plans delayed due to storm and absence of Mrs Grandia.
Dear Chronicle readers I have been in the U S Army ten days and soon in the band ready to go to France Our meals were tough sand and dust salt scarce yet the band issued a full uniform and gear The bandmaster Lieut Lacock praises the 60 piece unit with sons of Herb and Lloyd Barnhouse and hopes to visit home soon He invites loved ones to visit but says few can travel while war continues The Y differs from the Detention Camp experience and the band enjoys ample rations and orderly service The writer urges keeping the band going and mentions Murray Cox as a trusted helper The message ends with news of the First Reformed church nearing completion.

The new bank will occupy the Citizens National Bank building with a $50,000 capitalization. A directors’ meeting will set officers and complete the name and capitalization changes soon, pending federal paperwork.
The Idwa Library Commission will host a library exhibit in its ground floor room at the state fair. The display highlights the traveling library, library war activities, food conservation, book collection, and records of local soldiers to show how libraries aid free book provision and support the war effort.
The annual Old Settlers Reunion in Monroe will be held Thursday August 22. Judge Hayes of Knoxville will deliver the address. Knoxville girls band will provide music and a vocal quartet. Arrangements are made for a colored quartet from Moines to attend. A good time is assured for all attendees.
A community farmers picnic will be held all day Friday August 23 at Pauly Ver Meer Grove east of town. Everyone is welcome to join J M Gooselink Peter Vogelaar and committee urge attendance for a good time and social gathering.
