Weekly Crop and weather report
Moderate day temperatures dominated the week with cooler nights and near record lows on the 28th and 29th. Reported highs reached 90 at Rock Rapids and 44 at Saratoga on the 29th. A dry midweek gave way to a band of light showers and thunderstorms around July 30 with scattered showers on the 31st, some areas barely receiving measurable rain. Local downpours Friday night brought 2.45 inches in Dubuque and 3.12 inches in Clinton. Soil moisture shortages grow more critical, affecting pastures and hay fields, while corn and soybeans stay generally good. Oat harvest and second hay cut progressed well. by Aug 2 about 88% of corn tasseled, 66% silked, 12% dough. soybeans were ~80% blooming with 40% podding. alfalfa and clover second cuts were largely complete. Most of the week favored field work. corn maturity lags 1964 but remains near the average. Weather and moisture remain pivotal for yields.
