Atom Smasher Nears Operation At State University Of Iowa
Towa City Iowa July 29 research into what holds the atom together will soon be sped up at the State University of Iowa when the universitys new Van de Graaff atom smasher goes into operation. Finishing touches are now being put on the new 6 million volt giant under a grant of $40 000 from the U S atomic energy commission. James A Jacobs professor of nuclear physics says it will increase voltages about ten times over existing equipment. The device is 50 feet long with 8 foot diameter steel walls and a heavy door. Nine men will soon work full time in nuclear research at the university along with about 20 other such smashers in the United States. Jacobs notes work began in 1937 and resumed after the war, not classified by the AEC, and seen as pure research. The smasher operates with a 60 mile per hour belt charging an electrode to high voltage, accelerating particles to 10 000 miles per second to smash atomic nuclei. Initial targets will include lithium and boron.

Boy Buried in Mud Rescued After Truck Overturns
In Carson a seven year old boy named Norman Rogasch was ejected when a pickup hit a fencing post and overturned. He was buried in mud and water but his mother freed him and he breathed. A nearby farmer helped raise the truck and Norman escaped with minor bruises.
