Duel Between Old Jim Baker and Frenchman in Wyoming Frontier
The story recalls Old Jim Baker, ally of Kit Carson and Jim Bridger, trading near the Green river where emigrants crossed the Oregon Trail. A drinking duel with a French rival ended after hours of firing from cabins a hundred yards apart. Baker, born in Illinois in 1800s, survived bear attacks, guided Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston in 1857, helped found Denver, and died in 1908, leaving a life of frontier exploits second only to Bridger in notoriety.
