Old-Time Railroad Men Lost Fingers to Link-Pin Coupler
Frank Gregoire of Pella preserves an 85 year old link and pin coupler once used on trains before modern systems. The device, found in Cordova and South Pella, recalls the risk of finger loss among old time railroad workers who handled couplers by hand. Gregoire, currently a brakeman and conductor, plans to retire soon near Des Moines. He recalls his father William “Boom” Gregoire who also worked for the railroad.
