Don’t Rush Pasture Use For Cows This Spring
Extension dairyman Floyd Arnold of Iowa College cautions farmers against turning cows to pasture too early this spring. He warns early grazing can weaken pasture stands, reduce milk production, and cause bogging in wet pastures. Continue hay and silage, graze a few hours daily, and fed hay all summer to maximize forage efficiency and prevent bloating from legumes.

Mechanized Aids Replace Muscle on Electrified Farms
On modern farms heavy lifting for hay ear corn grain and feed is increasingly done by elevators unloaders blowers chutes and pipes. Early spring farrowings rise aided by warming aids
The shift toward early spring farrowings grows due to electric warming devices and central heating in pens helping piglets. First four months now account for about 13 percent of spring litters versus 4?4 per cent last year, with a 10 year average near 28.5 percent. Projections of a 7 percent spring crop rise may be unmet. Sow litters saved per litter in early months roughly match last year, aided by USDA and Iowa State matching funds under 1946 act.
