Sgt Glenn A Koop reports actions with the 194th Field Artillery Battalion of the Seventh Army in France. The brief item notes unit assignment and service context during the European campaign.
Kaopman, a 28 year old from 627 Franklin Street, Pella Iowa, served with the Grill Company in the European Theater. He landed in North Africa in 1942 and participated in battles including Anzio and the Arno. He earned three bronze service stars for Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, and German campaign battles and aided in the liberation of Southern France. He is nephew to Mr. and Mrs. Woo P Koopman of the same address.
Leonard J Booy promoted from corporal to sergeant at Borland Air Depot Area Air Service Command. A payroll clerk, Booy serves with the personnel payroll section aiding front line planes and supply delivery in Europe. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Nick Booy of North Main Pelli.
PFC Martin Vos, son of Mrs. Arah Vos of Pella, wounded in left shoulder during a battle near Geeiline Yeram. He arrived home by mother’s account and remains in Exsland hospital. Vos entered service March 11, trained at Ft Knox Pine Camp Camp Bowie, and participated in D Day era maneuvers with Patton’s Third Army. He previously left service December 1 and returned to duty.
Special to the Chronicle reports Ensign Vander Linden, son of Mr. and Mrs. John N. Van Linden of Pella, receives a commission and qualification as a flight instructor at the Navy's School for Primary Flight Instructors in New Orleans. Commander Bitzeruld declares he will help forge many of the world's finest pilots as Vander Linden moves to NAS Bunker Hill Indiana for instructing duties. Chaplain Clifford Perron, assigned to Palm Springs, California, joins the 21st Ferrying Group of Air Transport Command after serving at Pella and Davenport.
A Central College football alumnus PFC Clarence T Griep writes from Navy Hospital in Hawaii on April 16 1945 recounting his Wounded Iwo Jima mortar strike March 14 losing his left leg to amputation and breaking his right leg. He recalls gratitude for medical care Red Cross and prayers and plans to return to Central College after recovery while honoring fallen comrades.
Clarence Martin Van Zee F2/c 92-55-22 has left Great Lakes and is stationed at U S Naval Training Center Newport Rhode Island awaiting ship assignment. He is listed with Vermillion Detail AKA 107 Division B in Newark?
Mrs. Betty Koopman Schip pers receives a commendation copy for her husband John Schip pers USNR SV 973-1109 from USS LSM R 189. He participated creditably in the invasion of Japanese Empire islands delivering heavy assault, helping sink three enemy Q boats during night patrols under air attacks. The commendation, signed by Lieutenant James M. Stewart USNR, commends all officers and men for skill and courage.
A wartime note from Private Clarence T Griep expresses pride in comrades, optimism about soon returning to the States, and a wish to be home and see family again. The letter closes with sincere personal regards and anticipation of reunion.
PFC Ray De Wit of the Army Signal Corps writes to his parents from Okinawa on April 9 1945 describing local fields plots of wheat sugar cane cabbage carrots radishes and soybeans. He notes varied Japanese homes tombs and bone vases, weather reminiscent of spring or fall, and birthday cards from neighbors.
A list of soldiers and recruits with unit designations and training locations including C Bn 128 Bn Camp Livingston Louisiana Camp Robinson Arkansas Camp Fannin Texas Rand Regt Camp Robi n/C K W Emmert PAAF Pampa Texas Recruit Depot Parris Island South Carolina detailing serials and training centers in a regional compilation.
Seaman Bob Terpstra, son of Mr and Mrs Garrett Terpstr, has returned to duty at Corpus Christi Texas after boat training at Great Lakes. He expects three to four months there before transfer to California for further training. He notes better chow, clean barracks, and cool nights though 112 degree daytime heat. He has ridden in a PAY Catalina and asks friends to write.
Iowa land values climbed 6 percent from a year earlier as of March 1. The index stood at 107 percent of the base period, the highest since 1980 when it reached 1h percent.
The Department of Agriculture notes land values surged through 1940 but the recent year showed a gentler rise than the prior year. Iowa’s land value index reached 87 percent of the base on March 1 1942 and 11 a 16 percent gain by March 1 1944.
