The Pella High School community congratulates Jeanne Vin Garkom for meeting requirements to be queen and notes two high school girls chosen as attendants, Ruth Klein Theresa Wernhondt Janet de Kieft and Mareise Ver Steese. Principal praise highlights student effort, courtesy, and pride in school when inspected by MW supervisor K D Miller.
Albert Van Houweling was chosen president and Peter Van Orp as dent with Berni Jaursma secretary treasurer and Betty Dingeman chairing the graduation committee. Plans include special music and a guest speaker. The eighth graders enjoyed a Wiener roast at a pool picnic funded by candy sale proceeds.
The senior girls from the class of ’42 visited Central College for the Women’s Conference. Jessie Parker spoke on Women and the War in Douwstra Chapel followed by four 60 minute discussion groups. A noon luncheon at Jordan Hall featured highlights from the groups and music by the college choir.
The Central College mixed chorus directed by Harold Root presented a five part a cappella program for the P H S student body. Highlights included Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones and Now Thank We All Our God with expressive dynamics and strong vocal blend.
Nine neighboring chapters sent fifty two contestants to the pre state district contest at Pella High. Events included public and extemporaneous speaking parliamentary procedure and chapter contest with superior and excellent ratings. Indianola Winterset and Pella showed top results in parliamentary and speaking events while Lamont won the chapter contest and Indianola edged Lamont in the final round.

A Newton High music instructor and group demonstrations on physical training for rural schools followed, featuring table discussions and an open forum.
Two Pella High School girls earned first place ratings at the commercial contest in Newton last Saturday. The amateur typing team led by Joy Hackett also placed third, with Revena Muyser and Blanche Van Donselaar. Orleath Vogelaar captured first in novice typing with her team taking first overall. Dorothy Joe Bean earned third in individual ratings along with Wilma Slot. The amateur shorthand team took second with 96.50, Newton winning with 97. A third place in the maybe shorthand with 94.50 followed Vera Baughman Esteline Visser and Orleath Vogelaar. Congratulations to students and teachers for placing well against strong competition.
