Canning Plant in Peril as Grower Contracts Lapse

A Tuesday Chamber of Commerce meeting examined the Pella Canning Company’s struggle to secure enough sweet corn acres. Manager A Ver Ploegh said 407 signed acres exist vs 1400 needed to run at capacity, with road delays hampering the arrival of Stuart, an officer, and Knight noting corn prices at 17.50 per ton as the state’s highest but still insufficient to justify production. The article discusses farmer incentives, past contracts, potential drought, and a mood of discord between farmers and business interests, plus talks of a local historical society and freight bill auditing.
