Prairie pig farmer Roorda raises sows in open pasture near Pella

Andrew Roorda farms 228 acres near Pella and farrows sows outside with no shelters. He buys feeder pigs at low market prices, occasionally switches to sows to farrow in May, and sells hogs in small lots to balance risk. He foresees an $18-19 fall hog market, favoring government price supports and production limits. Roorda also runs a 19-cow dairy herd, breeds to Holsteins or Hereford bulls, and operates across multiple Iowa towns with four children.
