A passenger recounts a memory from thirty years ago aboard a New York Bay voyage. A doctor’s daughter Edith faced parental opposition to marriage, as she believed she could do better, while the narrator, then a lace importer, planned a Brussels post with a raise to marry her.
A man recalls Edith who resisted breaking with him to stay near her parents in America. She finally yields to marry for her family’s comfort, and the narrator sails away in despair. On deck he meets a striking woman who later proves to be Edith, now grown. Her parents decide to accompany her abroad, enabling the marriage with only six hours to prepare.
