Plant Lawn Seed Now For Iowa Lawns This Spring
County Extension Director Richard Freeman urges immediate seeding as soil dries and ground firms. Ed Cott of Iowa State University recommends mixes by lawn type, noting Kentucky bluegrass with creeping red fescue for sunny areas and tall fescue for heavy use. Choose quality seed, avoid cheap mixes, and consider annual ryegrass only for quick cover with caution on winter survival. For shady sites a 50 50 mix of Kentucky bluegrass and creeping red fescue is advised.
