Central faces NCAA probation after Whitewater game

Central College, after an undefeated football season, was placed on probation for one year by the NCAA for playing in the NAIA game at Whitewater on November 29. Central joined the NCAA last year to explore dual membership, seeks reinstatement at the 1968 meeting, and plans to present a dual membership case to both the NCAA and NAIA. Coach Ron Schipper said he was unaware of violations until an NCAA inquiry in Fort Lauderdale.

PHS Trackmen Take Kville Meet Victory

Pella High Varsity track men swept a three school meet at Knoxville on May 2. Competing teams were Pella High Knoxville High and Clark Community. Big Green earned two first places in field events led by Bob Pet.

Lynnville-Sully Clinches Second in DMRV Meet at Pella

The Lynnville-Sully track team finished second in the Des Moines River Conference meet in Pella, scoring 61 points. Gene Jensen won the 120 yard high hurdles in 16.9 seconds, Harv Terpstra took the 440 yard dash in 53.3 seconds, and the Hawks captured the 880 yard relay and mile relay titles. Ron Benson led field events by winning pole vault at 12 feet.

DeWild and Vander Pol Lead Pella Gun Club Shoot

Nelson Vander Pol edged De Wild in the doubles with 40 of 50 while De Wild won the 16 yard event with a perfect 50 of 50 and the high over all total at 136 of 150. Jim Smith tied with Co L Pierce for top handicap honors at 49 of 50. About 30 entries attended the club’s first registered shoot of the season as two more trap fields are being added for three upcoming shoots this summer.

Pella and Lynnville-Sully Star on State Track List

Dennis Van Gorp of Pella leads state open 880 with 2 02.6 and helps Pella two mile relay to 8 30.1, while Randy Sloan posts 144 in class A 120 yard low hurdle. Lynnville-Sully 880 relay tops class B at 3 32.0, Hawks medley runs 3 46.5 for third. Harv Terpstra 23.0 in class B open 220 yard dash.

PHS golf team improved to 15-2 with a quadrangular win at Albia and a home dual against Chariton. In Albia Pella led with 165, Chariton 178, Knoxville 180, Alicia 183. Kent Van Vark was medalist at 39, Patton 40, Caldwell and Heerema 43, Wilkins 47. Don Crawford posted 37 in Pella A’s 151-168 win over Chariton A. Patton 38, Heerema 38, Caldwell 39. Eagles Advance To District With 30 Victory

The Pella Christian High Eagles won 3-0 over Moulton-Udell in the sectional championship at Eddyville to reach the district semifinals. Pitcher Guy De Haan struck out 11 with one walk and one hit allowed, as Archie Vander Hart, Mike Vander Ploeg, Al Brouwer, Dennis Mulder, and Darrell Pethoven contributed key hits to improve the season record to 5-2. The team awaited the Burlington sectional winner for a district title bid at Eddyville.

Central Invitaton Track Meet yields two records and multiple seconds

Central College men score 61 points for second at their own meet. Dennis Karnstedt shatters mile and two mile marks with 4:16.1 and 9:27.5. Bradt wins the 440 and 880 yard dashes, Van Boven and Lindvall take seconds in sprints and high jump, while the mile relay also finishes second.

CUI Golfers Lose To Simpson

The Simpson Redmen defeated Central's golf team on May 2 at Indianola on a windswept course. Medalist Sean McCormack shot 36 34 70 on the par 66 layout, beating Bob Hybl 42 36 78 in a 3-0 score. Don Ver Meer 38 33 71 and Bill O'Connor 35 36 71 tied 1% match points in the number one match, while Bill Campbell 41 39 80 earned Central's only win over Bruce Davidson 37 44 81, 2-1.

Scores Show Close Runs In Dual Meet

Chry Kendle beats Bob Ulrich in a tight bout 40-75 and 75 with 40 35 75. Scott Springer defeats Gary Cederlund 37 35 72 as Mike Williams edges Tom Neulieb and another close finish 36 36 72 38 41 79.

SCI Defeats CUI Netmen 5-2 in Cedar Falls tennis clash

State College of Iowa defeated Central University in a 5-2 match on May 2 at Cedar Falls. Central’s wins came from Bob Firrott over Tom Van Deest 6-4 17-15 and Dave Bottger over Charles Gantenbin 6-1 6-2, with additional SCI winners Jim Barron over John Kuitwaard 6-3 7-5, Howard Aldrich 6-1 6-0, Norval Hills 6-2 6-0, and a final singles win by Bob Woodruff and Don Ringwalda 4-6 7-5 6-3 in doubles Barron/Aldrich defeated Bottger and Kuitwaard 13-11.

Ivan Eldenberg bowled 214 and 543 series to lead in the latest league. Chic Vils added 198 and 540. Ruth Van Den Baard rolled 189. Walter Butt converted the 5-6-10 split and Corinne Shetterly the 3-8 split in the same event.

Pella High Track Ends Second at Panther Relays

Pella High Varsity placed second among seventeen schools at the Panther Relays in Pekin, Iowa, led by a strong two mile relay and the 440 yard relay. Hoover of Toledo edged them for first, setting a school record in the winning event with a time of 8 32.5. Cont. on Page 5.

Eagles Advance To Sectional Finals

Pella Christian moved into the spring sectional final after a 8-1 victory over Blakesburg Monday. Brouwer limited the visitors to four hits and struck out ten with one walk as PC collected nine hits led by Ver Ploeg with a homer and a single Archie Vander Hart, Van Wyngarden, De Haan, B Ver Ploeg, Brouwer also contributing. The Eagles scored three in the fourth highlighted by the home run.
