Robert Vander Wal is appointed visiting professor of chemistry to continue research in food sciences as senior client. He earned a Iowa State University education with a 1927 degree, 1929 MA, and 1936 PhD, worked for EL Du Pont and Armour and Co, holds 20 patents, 25 journal articles, and ten book chapters. He is married to Olive Mary Adhard of Leeds England and is a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Oil Chemists Society.
John B. Bowles has been appointed assistant professor of biology at Central College. The move follows his early career at Wil, with a formal academic appointment in January 1965.
In July 1919 two men, including Dutch Ver Ploeg, ride from Denver to Rexford Kansas with Hi Nichols, recruited for harvest work. They abandon earlier plans for Golden Colorado, enter a long all night train journey, witness harsh laborers and a heavy barge system as they start duties unloading grain on Nichols ranch, with wages at ten dollars a day and high hopes.
The diary recounts a grueling Iowa wheat and barley harvest experience. Men drive and load grain into the thresher, endure heat and wind, sleep in a barn loft or Nichols parlor, share Denver stories, and receive final pay and rail fare after completing the barley harvest. The narrator describes meals, lodging, and the lure of moving north, returning to Pella in mid August with earnings for college expenses.

Monroe County school superintendent E. P. Schindler received a 30 year pin and certificate for perfect attendance at a Rotary Club meeting, recognizing his steady service and punctual presence over three decades.
The Iowa Employment Security Commission announces an on-the-job training program. A representative from the Oskaloosa office will be at the Pella Legion Hall each Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for information. The Des Moines office is authorized to place 1200 unemployed and under skilled Iowans in training, with employers reimbursed for training costs.
