After a Memorial Day break Iowa legislators push toward final adjournment in the 62nd General Assembly. The House leans to direct school aid while the Senate seeks personal property tax relief amid talk of higher taxes. The session costs, highway funding, court reform bills, and a Dubuque County House seat vacancy headline the stretch run as the Legislature nears sine die adjournment.
The House reconvened with Ray mond Miller of Dubuque County sworn to replace the late Arnold Utzig. The bid opening to protect the Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Embankments across the Whitebreast and Butcher Creek arms of the Red Rock Reservoir was postponed from May 25 to June 9 by the Rock Island District Corps of Engineers. Five local businessmen visited Thursday and lunched with Senator Haeberling to discuss tax problems. The Assembly appropriations committee reviewed the allocation of aid to area schools amid a state debt of 3,913,795 owed to 16 area colleges. The final decision rests with the assembly.
