Iowa Youth partners seek Iowa students ages 17 to 21 for an eight week exchange in Yucatan. Participants will live with a Yucatecan family, share culture, and study with locals. Cost about $30 for transportation and administration.
Two Pella women, Maria De Koning and Mary Wisse, are among seniors graduating from Iowa Lutheran Hospital's School of Nursing Thursday in Des Moines. They will receive diplomas in a ceremony featuring Marilyn Russell, executive director of the Public Health Nursing Assn. of Des Moines.
A Pella Community High School junior, Kym Renskers, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Armand Renskers, has been accepted for a National Science Foundation institute at Purdue University in biochemistry. The program requires hosting two Yucatan students from July 5 to August and prior host families are urged to contact Spanish instructors or Graham at Central College. applications deadline June 20.
Senator Eugene M. Hill reports voting no on three bills during a Friday session. He opposed repealing the 1949 road use tax fund allocation, noting potential gaps in highway funding if the general fund balance loosens. He criticizes shifting ADC costs to state control and opposes feeder cattle tax credits and a state takeover of welfare programs, citing loss of local control and broader tax implications.
Ed De Jong presided as Sixth District American Legion Commander during the Nevada conference. The Marion County Department of Social Services reports every current Aid to Dependent Children case arising from separation divorce or illegitimacy is under investigation by Joe Nugent State Services Child Support Recovery Officer. The probe targets court ordered nonpayments with contacts to responsible parents and potential legal action. An order to appear before the District Court may be issued. nonpayment could mean contempt of court and possible jail. About 35 cases have been referred so far and Nugent is notifying those who failed to pay for possible prosecution.
