Miss Susan Johnson of North Polk High School Alleman wins an essay contest sponsored by Iowans for Right to Work and the full text argues against compulsory unionism. The piece cites Jefferson on inalienable rights and questions how repealing the Right to Work would threaten other freedoms. A. D. Lubbers of Central College chairs the organization.
City council in regular session approves December 20, 1966 minutes, discusses taxi rates, park and historical society projects, and an ordinance amendment to move rate schedules. They authorize street and utility spending, approve numerous payroll and supplier payments, and adopt Resolution 1090 financing the 1967 city budget.
City Council awarded Knowling Bros Town City a contract for construction of a Sanitary sewer system. Motions included half damage claims paid by City and half by Pella Construction Co. final settlement for outfall sewer main to northeast disposal plant. Shut off notices dated January 14 1967. Garbage pickup policy discussed and tied to holidays with enforcement of city supply supervision. Meeting adjourned.
January 14, 1937, Peter Van Sittert resigned as secretary of the school board. Samuel Ver Steeg was elected to succeed him. The Chronicle notes Marion County relief and old age assistance counts, Farm Union leadership, and mentions local business and social events spanning 1927 and 1917.
Plan an open house on Saturday January 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall of the First Reformed Church honoring Mr and Mrs Vander Horst and their four children on their 40th wedding anniversary. Relatives invited. Also note births deaths and local appointments in nearby notes. Dr Lawrence Mills will appear on WOI TV channel 5 Ames Iowa on January 15 at 4 p.m. as Artist in Residence at Iowa State University.
