Local chatter covers consumer call concerns about a dubious coupon offer, Chamber of Commerce outreach, corn supply forecasts, and a statewide canvass. Reports note Iowa officials eye a 755 million budget for 1971, a leadership shift with State Revenue Director Forst leaving, and minority employment efforts in building trades alongside tax and education finance proposals.
The Goodwill Club held a Christmas potluck at Madge Dunsbergen’s home with a gift exchange. Attendees included Merle Conn Newton Mary Brown Grinnell Vivian Benson and others plus two guests Ada Jay Rose Jones who joined the club. Beth Jay became 4 H Junior Leadership Secretary and various local visits and family gatherings are noted across Lynnville Newton Grinnell and surrounding areas.
At a Des Moines convention the Town Farmers Union called for a one year property tax freeze and a shift of tax burden away from property toward income and other bases. President Gross urged a progressive net income tax, an investment equity tax, revised corporation tax to cover out of state business, and restoration of a service tax on advertising and new construction. American corn farmers may be asked to increase production if southern hemisphere crops fail. Dean Louis M. Thompson of Iowa State University spoke to the Farm Bureau in Houston noting a 5.1 billion bushel corn supply against 4.5 billion bushels used by the United States.
VA Administrator Donald E. Johnson told a Senate subcommittee that 78 125 VA employees make up over 45 percent of the VA workforce and cited 536 VRA appointments to date. He noted 32 504 veterans placed through Veterans Assistance Centers and 16 000 plus through Veterans Job Marts, with about 2 000 hired on the spot. The Boston Job Mart placed roughly 1 400 veterans, and thousands more stand as prime applicants. Johnson stressed VA’s role in aiding veteran employment under Nixon’s national Jobs for Veterans Program.
