Editorial notes a controversial Iowa bill to permit limited gambling by fairs and nonprofits, dubbed church bingo. Proponents include church groups unhappy with prior bingo crackdowns, while confusion and moral concerns echo across the debate.
The GOP led House rejected creating a transportation department and instead formed a transportation planning commission to study Iowa needs. Rep Richard Welden proposed the plan with a July 1 1973 policy deadline. A special election produced Rollin Howell winning House district 13. The chamber now stands 35 Republicans and 45 Democrats. Little cigars tax bill passes both chambers.
Four Pella women stopped at the Pella Fair to view a new Reo 106 Model car shown by a local dealer. The event highlighted the car as a prop with the ladies attracting attention while the crowd watched the old bulb horn and lighting features. A separate Iowa Senate debate ended with a 3 to 13 vote on social gambling amendments proposed by Sen. Gene Glenn.
Randy Rumery reports progress as the chamber float committee tears down the carrier and refines the float design for Tulip Time. A new informal group to improve communications among Pella public agencies held its first successful meeting and will meet biweekly.
An audit under Lowe law of Marion County Recorder Marion Toom covers Jan 1 1972 to Feb 27 1973, finds 721 dollars due from sale of 135 licenses paid March 7 1973, with a recommendation for improved record keeping. The report lists officials alphabetically and notes Rotary and local talk in March including Mexico teacher Martha Musi praising cultural exchange and a Pella community meeting with Joe Bassieur and Dale Mauer of Hawkeye Telephone.
