United Way drive set in Pecos kickoff October first
The Pecos United Way Campaign will begin October 1 with advance gifts from local businesses and organizations. Ellen Weinhacht, campaign chairman, said 76 solicitation cards will be sent to area firms while volunteers will canvass the public on election day. Funds go to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Salvation Army, Pecos Day Nursery, Planned Parenthood, and youth leagues with quarterly disbursements. Turkish jetliner crash leaves 155 dead in central Turkey
Rescue workers faced the grim task of separating 155 bodies from the wreckage of a Turkish Boeing 727 that crashed on a mountainside Sunday night. All 147 passengers and eight crew members were killed. Nationalities included 85 Italians and 18 West Germans bound for Turkey’s southwest coast, plus 22 Turks. Identification proved difficult as bodies were torn apart.

Thunderstorm delivers half inch rain to Pecos area
A morning storm from the north dumped about 0.50 inches of rain on Pecos with earlier high winds near 54 mph in Orla. Water tanks overturned and power out on Red Bluff Lake's north end. Temp ranged from the low 60s to low 80s as widespread rain drenched West Central Texas.
