Inter-club council to form Saturday in Pecos

A group named The Inter-Club Council will be formed Saturday with Pecos chamber of commerce help. Representatives from clubs and civic groups will meet at the community center banquet room to decide the council’s form and aims to improve racial relations and harmony. Co chairman Tommy Beauchamp notes it could coordinate club planning and aid media publicity, serving as a sounding board for officials. Beauchamp, temporary chamber chairman, emphasizes it is not a chamber group but will receive support. The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Saturday as organizers hope the effort becomes a powerful local force.

Gil elevated to sergeant in Pecos police department

Sergeant Ar mando Gil is named to the new rank effective today by Chief Charles Smith. He will lead the 4 pm to midnight shift as officer in charge. A 1.5 year patrol veteran, he moves up from humane officer after two years. Gil, from Toyah, holds a basic Texas law enforcement certificate and is pursuing intermediate rank through night courses.

Wacker's Pecos store appoints veteran J R Harris as manager

J R Harris, 50, transferred in June from Levelland where he led for four years to head Wacker's Variety Store in Pecos. A company veteran, Harris began with the chain in Big Spring 23 years ago as assistant manager. He and wife Evelyn live at 1619 S Alamo with their daughter Sherri, a Pecos High freshman.

Cookoff welcomes first entries for world barbecue title

World championship Barbeque beef cookoff opens entries with Jaycees first represented by B J Wilson who previously took second in the amateur division. Guilty verdict in federal narcotics case for two New Mexico men

Two Albuquerque men Conrado Gillie Carillo and Ernest Pete Montoya were found guilty of possessing heroin and importing it from Mexico. The 12 member jury delivered verdicts around 3 30 p m Wednesday in the Pecos division before Judge D W Suttle. Sentencing will follow closing arguments with potential fines up to 25000 and 15 years in prison per count plus three year parole terms.

Atencio Named New Manager of Foodway Store

Waldo Atencio is the new manager of the Foodway store replacing Al Lopez who transferred to El Paso in July. Atencio, 42, has 20 years in groceries and has worked four months at Foodway after four years at Foodland Dallas. He and his wife Ruth live at Casa Manana apartments.
