Mondale Leads High Stakes Push on Natural Gas Bill

In Washington, Vice President Mondale works from a near‑daily role in the Senate chamber as lobbying intensifies over a natural gas compromise vital to Carter administration aims. The bill faces a possible tie‑breaker vote, with 39 senators supporting, 41 opposing, and 20 undecided as a recommitment vote looms and a potential filibuster looms if blocked. The plan would lift price controls on new gas in 1985 and allow gradual price increases to that point.
