The Pecos Lions Club schedules a fish fry for next Tuesday night at the home of Hollis Smith starting 7 30 p m replacing the regular Wednesday luncheon. Dr J L Kincannon and other anglers plan to fish over the weekend. At the luncheon Mrs J C Wilson and Miss Warren Collings sang two numbers with piano by Miss Beverly Vaughan. Superintendent R Henry Blackwell spoke on school and football prospects and read letters for Pecos High head coach Jim Neill. Blackwell elected a director Buck Jackson tail twister Ace Ramsay Liontamer. President Harold Lindley and Past President Bill Turpin received lion keys.
Ted Johnston former Reeves and Ward county agricultural agent returned to Pecos this week to resume duties after a six month leave. During absence Joe Matthews filled the role and plans to depart next week to finish work at Texas A and M College.
Residents urged to use correct house numbers and street names as Pecos prepares to launch city mail delivery on October 1. Postmaster M W Collie said two carriers will operate two daily deliveries with new mail boxes in the business district and rates rising to two cents per ounce.
Mrs. Earnest Jackson 65 of Natchez Mississippi died Saturday afternoon when the car she rode in overturned three times ten miles north of Pecos after a blow-out. She was thrown from the vehicle and struck during the first roll. Her body was returned to Natchez for burial. Her husband arrived Saturday night. Passengers Mrs. W O Williams 50 and Mrs. Ollie Williamson 25 of Dallas sustained minor injuries and bruises in a Pecos hospital.
The Pecos Enterprise sponsors a business building campaign offering a de luxe Ford worth 936 dollars as first prize to the contestant with the most votes by November 5. Six contestants entered with many more expected, entries open to any woman or girl in the Trans Pecos area, no obligation. Votes come with Enterprise subscriptions and coupon books. weekly commissions are paid. Merchants from Pecos and area join, inviting others to participate.
Pecos to formally open an 18 thousand dollar Conoco service station at Third and Cedar next Thursday. Frank Joplin, manager, said the building and equipment total about 25 thousand dollars including new pumps and tanks. Whitehart Construction of Ponca City Oklahoma did the general contract with mostly local labor.
West Texas irrigated cotton producers protest alleged federal discrimination in cotton loan scheduling affecting West Texas New Mexico Arizona and California. Ben Smith secretary wired Senators Sheppard Connally and Rep Thomason and spoke with Senator Connally to seek equitable pricing and removal of the bias noted by farm groups and the Pecos Chamber of Commerce.
A second petition asking the city council to investigate a municipal power plant is to be presented within days. The council circulated it after reports of signer dissatisfaction and misunderstandings about the first document. A satisfactory contract has been submitted by a prospective engineer.
The Drillers completed a deeper drill at the Anthony Richard Shaw No 1 site located 35 miles northwest in Reeves county. The well reached a depth of 1056 feet in the north west 1-4 section 16 block 39 on public school land.
In Saturdays runoff, Burchard defeats Pope for commissioner No.2 by 86 to 85, Woolfolk tops Pittman 861 to 702 for county judge, and Smith edges Cummings by 11 in county clerk race. Jones re-elected commissioner No.3, with mixed results across Balmorhea Saragosa and Toyah boxes. Reeves County backed Bradford for state representative despite overall GOP trends and showed strong support for several Stevenson and related statewide contenders.
Opening of the 1938 Pecos school term is set for Tuesday at 9 am with about 1000 students and 29 faculty. A Monday dedication marks the new elementary building costing 65000 dollars. Rev W M Turner will dedicate it as the high school band plays. Open house and tours follow the Tuesday opening with staggered faculty meetings and a 50 cent library fee for older students. Unders aged six may attend if space allows.
Honor able R E Thomason reports to Roswell and Red Bluff that the Bureau of Reclamation plans no action on using the Hondo Reservoir for flood protection. Reclamation superintendent L E Foster offered assistance to resolve differences while noting no encroachment on Texas rights.
G B Finley division 6 highway engineer was moved this week to Corpus Christi effective immediately. He will leave Sunday and plans to return to Pecos briefly for his wife. Bob Killmer of Marfa will replace him here within days. Finley has led the division for 11 years shaping West Texas highways and earning local friendships for the couple. Mrs Finley has been active in church and club work and taught in Pecos schools until recent years.
Pecos residents will vote Sept 17 on issuing bonds for sewer extension, municipal auditorium, and street improvements. Each project may be approved separately with 45 percent grant and 55 percent loan from the PWA. Total bonds $120,000, city share about $58,000, voters must meet eligibility by property taxation.
Miss Mary Ellen Smith of Claude Texas elected by Pecos school board as librarian and elementary school teacher. She replaces Miss Lucy Ann Cowan who resigned to accept a Seymour position. Smith is a CIA Denton graduate and will run the high school library and teach English in the junior high.
About 150 Pecos residents and band students plan a coating motorcade to Midland for the annual cowboy contest closing day. The group will wear loud shirts work trousers high boots and ten gallon hats as part of a 8 o'clock Monday departure from the Chamber of Commerce office. Governor elect W Lee O Danial is slated to visit the same day with an estimated 10 000 visitors expected.
Barney Haygood former Pecos resident died at his Kilgore home after three months illness. He was Kilgore Chamber of Commerce manager and previously a professional fighter aviator and pharmacist. He studied at the University of Texas Mexican school in Galveston paying expenses by fighting. Survivors include his mother Mrs A L Haygood and a brother Macey of Menard.
