Mark Spitz, from Carmichael California, won the 100-meter butterfly in 54.27 seconds to claim his fourth gold and then anchored the United States 800-meter freestyle relay team to a fifth gold at the Munich Games. He trails only in pursuit of a possible seventh gold, with more events to come. Hoops and delays disrupted Eddie Hart and Ray Robinson as scheduling foul ups marred sprint events.

Doves Abundant West of Hidalgo For Hunting Season

Texas Parks and Wildlife biologists report plenty of whitewinged doves west of Hidalgo along the Rio Grande when the season opens September 2 4. Early counts show increased numbers in that area while south of Highway 281 populations fall, closing that dove season. Hunters north of 281 may still find good shooting as several spots hold adequate birds. Biologists urge harvesting data via check stations and bag tags to gauge production and density for the breeding season.
