Fort Davis Founding Marked by 1854 Special Orders
An aging Fort Davis narrative recalls its 1854 origin when Persifor Smith issued Special Order No. 129 and Washington Seawell began the camp that became the fort. Early years show rough pine and thatched structures, later replaced by stone barracks yet plagued by drafts and repairs until 1861. The first fort’s harsh conditions contrasted with the Second Fort (1867–1891) yet the climate and resources kept it a preferred Southwest post.
