Israel Reports New Tank Battles Near Suez Canal
The Associated Press says Israeli forces on both sides of the Suez Canal fought new tank battles. Israel claimed a bridgehead on the canal’s west bank and said it pushed armor across the waterway while repulsing Egyptian counterattacks. Egypt disputed the bridgehead claim as state news noted Kosygin’s Cairo talks and Kissinger’s diplomacy. Saudi Arabia cut oil output 10 percent, threatening to halt U.S. shipments if arms to Israel continued. Dayan was said to have visited the bridgehead as Israel reported four days of heavy engagements and about 360 Egyptian tanks destroyed.
