Police report a massive downtown disorder with 30 stores looted and 30 to 40 damaged. About 96 arrests for intoxication and five for disorderly conduct, plus two juveniles. One officer was assaulted and a single wound reported amid scattered gunfire and fireworks misread as shots. Riot squads dispersed crowds after ten hours.
The Associated Press reports 29 violent deaths in Texas over the weekend, with 21 traffic fatalities. A three death crash at Dallas International Motor Speedway near Lewisville dominates the toll, while rains and floods in South Texas add drownings and auto fatalities.
A cold front swept into West Texas and the Panhandle with a winter storm from the Rocky Mountains. Tornadoes hit Borger Morton Amherst and southwest of Spearman, while streams broke banks around San Diego and Corpus Christi. Red Cross shelters housed evacuees and at least one drowning was reported as flooding spread statewide.

In Pecos Texas residents with junked or unusable vehicles risk confiscation under the Texas Abandoned Motor Vehicle Act. Cars visible from public areas may be seized, owners receive 10 day mail notices, and if the last owner is unknown a public auction will publish notices and transfer title free of liens to the winner.
Joseph E. Crocetti a 52 year old Illinois man suffered possible back and hip injuries when the truck tractor he was driving overturned one mile east of Toyah on U S 80 at 8 20 a m His wife Helen was in the truck but uninjured Police said he swerved to avoid workmen in a construction zone and was thrown from the vehicle as it overturned up an embankment
Dr Charles G Groat associate director at UTs Bureau of Economic Geology will address Pecos residents Thursday at 730 pm in the Pecos Community Center. The talk, arranged by the Pecos Chamber Industrial Division, covers mineral resources past and present and potential industrial minerals excluding oil and gas.
Miss Libby Clark of Cotton Incorporated New York will visit Pecos for a Cotton Crusaders luncheon and style show at Ben's Spanish Inn. She tours the Cotton Belt to engage women’s groups with cotton industry activities. Also attending are El Paso members led by Mrs. A R Miller and Miss Anne Slack, Pecos Miss 1971.
