Marines land during naval exercise at Guantanamo Bay
About 2,200 Marines took part in a dawn landing at Guantanamo Bay in a show-the-flag drill arranged by the Carter administration. A Soviet surveillance ship loomed offshore while Cuban reservists were called to duty. Navy officials stressed the drill was routine training, not a media stunt, as helicopters and amphibious craft reinforced the base.
