Strauss Faces Tight Rope To Rebuild Democratic Party
Democratic chairman Robert Strauss says the party is closer to unity after 10 months, with reforms underway, a campaign committee to aid 1974 candidates, and a new advisory council. He mediated a reform commission compromise on quotas while resisting a bid to expand the panel. A party campaign organization led by Gov. Jimmy Carter is praised as a major effort, and a new National Advisory Council gives elected officials influence on policy. The party seeks to maintain momentum after a $6 million telethon and aims to focus on broad issues like health and inflation.
