Minnesota coach Bud Grant and Dallas coach Tom Landry urged Commissioner Rozelle to reform the so called balanced schedule. Grant called it unfair and said the fourth place team could face tougher opponents than a first place squad. Landry questioned the current setup and suggested computer aid to equalize the path to the playoffs, noting Tampa Bay’s strong, uneven schedule.
Thursday events list high school football games at 4 to 7 p m including Zavala Alpine Crockett Big Spring and Freshman teams plus a 6 30 p m volleyball match Queens Lamesa. Friday features Eagles Alpine Balmorhea Ft Davis games and Saturday offers Junior Varsity Hobbs NM. An NFL note discusses scheduling fairness and mental aspects of a 16 game season with comments from Landry.
Willie Stargell delivered a three run homer in the 11th inning to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5 2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds and seize the early lead in the National League playoff series. He joked about giving himself a gold star while noting he has handed out nearly 6 000 to teammates. The Reds started Frank Pastore against Jim Bibby as Pittsburgh opened the best of five set.
The 12 year old competition sponsored by Pecos Motors crowned winners Stephen Pruit in fourth? Not clear. first place Sebastian Cedillo and third Erasmo Acosta. In other baseball notes, Stargell plans to play through the championship series, praised as MVP. Pirates beat the Reds with Stargell's 11th inning homer off Tom Hume.
