Bill Chappell, a Pecos artist, sells paintings for 2700 dollars and struggles to supply bronze statues to dealers. He says he began by whittling or carving as a hobby and now lives in Pecos during winter holidays with his wife, balancing sales and production.
Steve Fine 13 and Manuel Moya 45 were missing in the Scott Ranch area. Fine was found after 17 hours and 16 miles of wandering near Pecos while Moya was located west of his camp after 24 hours. Three Fredericksburg men were found dead in a shelter on a deer lease north of Van Horn. Sheriff Upchurch said a coroner was on scene.

Hardest hit areas reported subzero and single digit readings with Marfa at minus two and Amarillo reaching three below. Forecasters expected moderating conditions by evening.
