Pecos once hosted West's largest oil refinery
In 1928 Pecos welcomed a $500000 refinery by F W Burford, later expanding to a $1 million plant with 125000 gallons daily capacity and ethyl gasoline Red Chief. The facility employed many locals, but after a 1933 fire it never reopened and was dismantled, leaving only a couple of office buildings and employee homes.

Needs of young are real too in Social Security debate
The proposed Social Security raise would lift benefits from about 11 000 to just over 13 000 yearly and include a June cost of living adjustment. The measure, passed by the House, faces Senate approval and aims to help the elderly amid inflation. Critics warn that rising taxes may burden workers and stress the need for a balance between elderly care and support for younger families to avoid a divided society.

Energy and oil policy under Nixon confronts tough realities
The piece warns that despite talk of urgency over oil shortages, Americans face stubborn, long term energy problems. It cites rising prices from foreign suppliers, refinery capacity limits, and the need for dozens of new refineries by 1985 amid environmental opposition. It notes Alaska pipeline prospects, potential offshore ports, and vast reserves in oil shale and coal, all requiring enormous investment and environmental safeguards.
