A Chamber of Commerce poll of directors shows 86 percent expect more job openings in Pecos next year and 100 percent say enough workers will be available. The report accompanies local beautification plans and community education initiatives.
Police recovered the decapitated body of Gloria Ann Gonzales, 19, a bookkeeper, from tall grass in a wooded area near Addicks Reservoir in Houston. Missing since October 28, a roommate last saw her then. Investigators note a two foot cord attached to a four inch wood fragment around the neck. Strangulation suspected.
President Nixon moves toward invoking the Taft Hartley Act to end the East and Gulf Coast longshoremen strikes. A four member inquiry board, led by J Keith Mann, will report before the attorney general seeks a federal injunction. Talks at Miami Beach are described as deadlocked with 45,000 longshoremen idle.
Rev Butler Smith reports seven windows smashed at North Temple Baptist Church 406 N CSt Tuesday night rocks were thrown through the glass. He found the damage about 6 45 p m and estimates losses at 100 dollars.
Midland El Paso and Odessa counties reject bonds Tuesday. Voters turn down a 7.7 million plan for Permian Junior College Odessa and Stanton school bonds fail 380 to 300 for a new gym and improvements. West Texas Junior College District approves 2.5 million bond for a student center and buildings in Snyder.
Santa Claus visits Pecos on Friday delivering citywide rides in a Texas style sleigh pulled by Shetland mules sponsored by the Pecos Chamber of Commerce. The Pecos Enterprise debuts the Great Turkey Hunt offering daily prize turkeys or hams for 25 days starting Friday with a Christmas gift edition and extended store hours downtown.
Pakistan called reserves to active duty as India reports Gazetted fighting near the Bangladesh border. Indira Gandhi claims Indian forces retaliated after Pakistani armor and artillery struck toward the border, with clashes and air battles over East Pakistan.
A new Singer store at 1231 S Eddy Pecos will host a grand opening Friday. Owner Kenneth Orr says the shop will service sewing machines and vacuum cleaners, feature Philco products not yet in, and handle parts from other brands. Door prizes will be awarded. Deanna Orr and Mary Dunstan assist, along with their three sons.
The Pecos Enterprise will join local businesses in observing Thanksgiving with no paper tomorrow. Regular publication resumes on Friday.
Dry air from a Central Texas high pressure ridge kept morning temps cool with fog in Lub bock Midland San Angelo and Childress. Readings near daybreak ranged from 31 at El Paso to 52 at Brownsville and Tuesday highs from 42 in Amarillo to 76 in Browns ville with forecasts calling for mostly fair weather and slight warming for Thanksgiving Day.
The White House announced the resignation of Dr. Paul W. McCracken as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and named vice chairman Dr. Herbert Stein as his replacement.
